BioBlitz!
Still Pond Park, Glenmore
1-3 PM
How many different species of plants and animals can we identify in one hour? We will begin with a lesson on how to identify plants down to genus and species using a dichotomous key, then we'll each get a clipboard and some books for hints and get to work!
Cameras will be very helpful, since you can take a picture of something to bring to the group for help instead of taking the animal or plant out of its habitat.
It will also likely be very hot so make sure to wear a hat and lots of sunscreen!

Lost Lake Snake Hunt
Myra-Bellevue Provincial Park
1-3 PM
Our annual snake hunting adventure at Lost Lake! We will hike in to the lake from the access point on June Springs Rd (approx half an hour), learning about plants, animals, and the history of the area. This is in the middle of the burn zone from the 2003 fire, so we will talk a bit about the role fire has on forests and the steps of regrowth. Once we get to the lake, we will ready out nets and catch anything we find; snakes, frogs, bugs, tadpoles, and more! I will bring containers so we can all look at what we find before releasing it back where it was found.
The hike is easy enough to do in rubber boots, or you can bring a change of footwear for when we get there. The ground there is also spongy enough to go barefoot if you don't mind hauling home muddy kids! Also make sure to wear shorts or pants that can roll up as we will be getting right into the water.
The trail access point is somewhat difficult to find if you've never been there before, so we will be meeting at the East Kelowna Baseball Field parking lot and carpooling to the trail. There is not a lot of space to park there, so the fewer vehicles the better. Meet at the parking lot at 12:30 pm. If you miss the carpool group, the address of the trail access is 4406 June Springs Rd. When parking, do not completely block access to the roadway.
Cameras are a must for this adventure! As well, please remember to wear sunscreen, bring a water bottle, and have weather-appropriate clothing for the hike.

Snowshoeing Adventure!
10am-1pm
Nordic Center
Our annual snowshoe trip, lead by the intrepid naturalist Rick Gee. We will learn about trees, tracks, winter safety tips, and how to snowshoe.
After our foray into the woods, we will come back to the lodge for hot chocolate and hot dog lunch. I will provide the dogs, buns, and hot chocolate, but each family should bring a side to share (ie. veggies, popcorn, cookies, fruit slices).
As there is food, I need an accurate count of who will be attending, so it is very important to RSVP before the event.
However, this is a GREAT one to bring guests, so invite your friends!
And finally, the facility requests a donation of $2-5 per person to cover the costs of the lodge and trail maintenance. There is a box on site.

Alkaline Wetlands and other Extreme Environments
Kathleen Lake, Knox Mountain Park
Some organisms can live in places that humans could not, and they are called extremophiles.
Kathleen lake is a salt marsh, where the water has high concentrations of chemicals. Yet plants and animals live and thrive there, so how? And why?
This location is possible to drive up to using the park access road. There is no parking lot close though, so we will be pulling on to the side of the road.
If enough people RSVP then we will leave some cars at the closest lot and carpool up.
Bring water and a snack, and wear sunscreen!

We will hike to Lost Lake and find some reptiles and amphibians in order to learn more about how their bodies work and what makes them so unique.
Bring boots and a snack, I'll bring the nets.

Trees and Tracks
Nordic Center, 10AM-1PM
Rick Gee has again offered to donate his time and take us on an adventure around the Nordic Center. We will be learning about tracks and trees and maybe even some winter survival tips. The best thing is just seeing what we can find and learning about that.
When: 10 AM - 1 PM, Sunday February 21st
Where: Nordic Center (A bit past Big White turn-off, on Hwy 33)
What to Bring: Snowshoes, warm clothes appropriate for the weather, water bottle, a snack or treat to share with about 10 people, a camera, and a small donation for use of the facility
You will need to bring your own snowshoes to this event, so if you don't own any you will need to rent. The best place to go is "Sports Rent Kelowna" which is on Lakeshore Rd.
www.sportsrentkelowna.com/
We will also be having a wiener roast afterwards, which is paid for through the little bit of extra money from camp fees in September. This is where your shareable snacks will come out. I will also bring hot chocolate!
I hope to have a couple local community members join us on this adventure, both for the fun aspect, but also to try and involve more people in the club. I think it is healthy and important for kids to get to know other adults who they can talk to and ask questions from. And who DOESN'T like playing in the snow?
As always, please RSVP so I know how many people to expect

Walking in a Winter Wonderland
Enterprise Park, 1-3PM
As I was not able to get in contact with any professors at the university to see about touring their labs, this event has been changed to a snowy walk in the park.
This park is small, but the trails follow along Mill Creek. The entrance road is next to the Shaw building, behind Home Depot.
I expect it to be very cold, so please dress warmly. If it is extremely cold we will not stay out for the full two hours.

THIS EXPLORER DAY WAS MOVED DUE TO FORECAST OF EXTREME WEATHER FOR LAST WEEKEND!
I hope everyone isn't sick of snakes! After a beautiful hike through the burn zone of the 2003 fire, where we will talk about ecological succession and how a forest develops, we'll reach Lost Lake. Because of its unique location between high ridges of exposed rock, this body of water is where all the garter snakes come to feed after emerging from their hibernaculums.
Make sure to pack a water bottle and wear good shoes for this hike, no sandals please!
When: May 31st, 1-4 PM
Where: Lost Lake, Myra-Bellevue Park
What to Bring: good hiking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, boots or water shoes if you don't want to go barefoot, short pants or zip-aways for going in the water, a good sized water bottle, and a healthy snack
Due to the extremely limited parking at the trail-head we will be meeting at the parking lot at East Kelowna Rd Tennis Courts. The closest address (according to Google) is 2735 E Kelowna Rd.
We will then carpool up June Springs Rd to the trail.
**Please be at the East Kelowna Rd lot at 12:30 to arrange the car pool. We will be leaving the lot at 12:45**

Mushroom Mania
Angel Springs Trail, 12-4 PM
Lets identify and classify fungi as we hike up the mountain trail. We will be taking pictures of each kind we see and making a little booklet for our club.
This is a hike with a pretty good incline, we are going up a mountain. The duration of the hike is about three hours, but we can turn around and come back down short of the top if people are too tired. Normally we encourage younger siblings to join us (those under the minimum age of 5) but this hike is not for little legs.
What to Bring: good shoes for hiking, water, snack, camera, and lots of questions!

Lost Lake Snake Adventure
Myra-Bellevue Park, 1-3 PM
Yes, it's that time of year again!
We will trek through the burn zone in Myra-Bellevue Park to Lost Lake to catch some snakes.
On the way we will be collecting some early seeds to begin our fundraising project for the year. I hope to raise some money so that the cost of our September camping trip will be reduced. The plan is to sell packages of native plant seeds to promote environmentally conscious gardening here in the Okanagan.
What to bring: Dress appropriately for the weather (the trail is very exposed so it can get quite hot), bring boots or water shoes to change into or wear for the walk, SUNSCREEN, a water bottle, and a snack.
The parking at at the trail-head for this excursion is very limited, so I propose that we meet a little ways down the road, at East Kelowna Park at 12:30 and carpool there.
If anyone is running late and needs to go directly to the trail-head, travel down McCulloch Rd then turn right on June Springs Rd. Continue up June Springs past two switchbacks and turn off on a backwards facing road on the right.

The Maps link shows how to get to the turn-off from the park. The parking area for the trail is along the first corner of this road. We can pack in about 5 vehicles, but must be careful to not block off the road.
As always, please RSVP so I know how many nets to bring.

SORCO Open House
Okanagan Falls, 10AM - 3PM
Due to lack of response from any of the nurseries I contacted, we won't be doing that activity next week.
For those who are interested, there is an alternative event that day but it involves some driving.
The South Okanagan Rehabilitation Center for Owls (SORCO) is having their annual open house from 10 am to 3 pm. They only open their doors once per year, so you might like to take this opportunity to get up close to some birds of prey. They also have other activities and a BBQ (by donation).

Forestry
Greata Creek Camp (Peachland), 1-3pm
A member of the Central Okanagan Naturalists' Club, Don Guild is going to teach us about forestry here in the Okanagan. How do we responsibly harvest our forests to they will be here for generations to come? Are we doing it that way now?
We will also be having a wiener roast and play outside in the (hopefully) snow! Make sure to dress appropriately.
Please bring a snack and a drink for yourselves as well, and a brain full of questions about forestry!
Here is a google map of the driving directions to the camp. It is at kilometer 8 on Headwaters Road.

The Okanagan Shrub-Steppe Ecosystem
Eain Lamont Park (Mount Boucherie) 1-3 pm
I hope you have been out enjoying the chilly weather and beautiful changes of fall. Thanks to all the families that joined us in October for the trek to Angel Springs, and if anyone has pictures they'd like to send in for me to put on the website that would be appreciated.
Our next adventure will be at Mount Boucherie, through Eain Lamont Park.
We will meet at 1 pm at the park lot.
Please bring a jacket and probably a toque/gloves in case the day is cool.
Directions: Turn off Hwy 97 onto Hudson Rd. For those coming from Kelowna this will be a LEFT turn. Turn right on Guidi and right again on Trevor. Continue on this road, it will change names to Lakeview Cove Rd. Take a right to continue on the same road, then turn left into the park lot after a sharp left corner. There will be a small sign, but the road ends shortly after so if you miss it just turn around there.
We will be discussing the threatened ecosystems of the Okanagan, so if you want to read up on endangered species of animals or plants that will be beneficial.
Mount Boucherie is also a dormant volcano so the rocks there are really interesting.

Microbiology
EECO Center, 1-3 pm
We are small compared to the size of the earth, and bacteria are that much smaller than us! Many things in our world are ruled by the actions of things too small to see with the naked eye. From making you sick, to creating the foods we love to eat: microorganisms are the key. We will be learning about these microorganisms, and creating our own models of bacteria or viruses.
THIS IS A CHANGE, we are no longer going to Vernon.
